This further education campus offers outstanding vocational training facilities for the South Essex region and has dramatically enhanced the built environment and open spaces in Gray’s town centre.
The teaching accommodation is incorporated in two primary buildings, linked by a centrally landscaped area. Public footpaths run through the heart of the college, creating a seamless connection to the town centre and encouraging community interaction.
Whilst different in overall scale and form, both buildings are designed with a common language of materials, proportion and detail, including the use of coloured reveals to highlight entrances and windows. Sustainable design is integral to the campus, with rainwater harvesting systems and roof-mounted photovoltaic panels supporting the environmental design strategy.
Key internal areas of SEC’s campus include a central reception street that features a training restaurant and a hair and beauty salon, the latter designed with a distinctive shopfront aesthetic. Guided by our core design values—Flow, Energy, and Showcase—these spaces offer students hands-on, real-world work experience while fostering active engagement with the local community.
The architectural language of the exterior is echoed within, notably in the design of the reception desk and the glazing manifestations. Coordinated external and internal wayfinding systems, including flag-style identifiers and colour-coded floor plans, to support straightforward and intuitive navigation.
“The design appeals to young people and also works well as an educational establishment.”
Anthony McGarel, Chief Executive, South Essex College
