Our appointment by The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) covered a full range of architectural and design services for the redevelopment of No.1 Court at Wimbledon.
Granted planning permission in 2015, the project set out to deliver a retractable roof spanning both the playing arena and spectator seating, ensuring uninterrupted championship play when external lighting conditions are poor and enabling extended evening matches.
The 6,000 sqm retractable roof, constructed with a PTFE membrane, closes within 8–10 minutes, transforming the open-air stadium into a fully enclosed arena. Capacity was increased to 12,345, elevating both functionality and spectator experience.
The scope expanded to include the design and delivery of 15 new premium hospitality suites, upgrades to the debenture areas, commentary boxes, redevelopment of the former Court 19 into an external food court and courtyard, as well as significant enhancements to the officials’ and players’ facilities.
The new hospitality suites and landscaped food courtyard were designed to respect Wimbledon’s unique heritage and traditions, while aligning with the Club’s vision of tennis in an English garden. Delivered in phases from 2016 through to 2020, the programme ensured operational continuity, with all facilities remaining available for The Championships each year.
We work across a diverse range of projects and take pride in consistently delivering results through strong collaboration, learning from one another and providing support to achieve the best outcomes.
The award-winning facilities further enhance the quality of the spectator experience, thereby supporting AELTC’s aim of maintaining Wimbledon’s status as the premier Grand Slam event in world tennis.
“KSS should be proud of all the work they have done in maintaining Wimbledon’s status as the premier Grand Slam event. We have thoroughly enjoyed continuing our work with KSS beyond the No.1 Court redevelopment.”
